How Many VBeam Sessions
Do You Need? Honest Answer.

It depends on your rosacea — not on a treatment package. Here's a clear, no-fluff breakdown of what to expect based on your actual skin.

The short answer

Most People Need Between 2 and 4 Sessions.

That's the honest answer for most rosacea presentations. But the more useful answer is: it depends on what you're treating, how long you've had it, and how your skin responds. Some people see dramatic improvement after one session. Others with longstanding, stubborn rosacea need a more sustained course.

What I won't do is give you a fixed package number to sell you more sessions than you need. At Laser by Tom, every treatment plan is based on your skin at your free consultation — not on a predetermined course.

"The goal is always the minimum number of sessions needed to achieve the best result — not the maximum number I can book you in for."

By Severity

Sessions by Rosacea Type & Severity

Here's a realistic breakdown based on what I typically see in clinic. These are starting points — your consultation will give you a personalised plan.

Mild

Light redness & occasional flushing

1–2

sessions

Early-stage rosacea with diffuse redness and flushing that hasn't yet progressed to visible capillaries. Often responds quickly and well to a single session, with one follow-up for consolidation.

Moderate

Persistent redness & visible capillaries

2–4

sessions

The most common presentation. Visible broken capillaries, consistent facial redness, and flushing that doesn't settle easily. Most clients see significant improvement within this range, with sessions 4–6 weeks apart.

Persistent

Longstanding rosacea & dense vessels

4–6

sessions

Rosacea that has been present for many years or gone untreated, with dense visible vessels and significant background redness. A longer course is needed, but results are still very achievable.

Concern Typical Sessions Interval Maintenance
Mild redness / flushing 1–2 sessions 4–6 weeks apart Occasional top-up
Moderate rosacea 2–4 sessions 4–6 weeks apart Every 6–12 months
Visible broken capillaries 2–4 sessions 4–6 weeks apart Periodic review
Longstanding / persistent rosacea 4–6 sessions 4–6 weeks apart Every 6–12 months
Nose & facial spider veins 1–3 sessions 4 weeks apart As needed
Leg veins 1–3 sessions 6 weeks apart As needed
Important: these ranges assume you're pairing treatment with good trigger management — daily SPF 50+, avoiding known triggers like alcohol and heat, and using a gentle skincare routine. Without this, even the best VBeam results won't last as long as they should.

What Affects the Number

Factors That Influence How Many Sessions You Need

Two people with rosacea can have very different treatment journeys. These are the main variables that affect how many sessions you'll need.

More sessions likely

These factors increase the number

  • Longstanding rosacea (10+ years untreated or undertreated)
  • Dense network of broken capillaries across the full face
  • Previous IPL that gave only temporary improvement
  • Ongoing high exposure to triggers (sun, alcohol, heat)
  • Phymatous rosacea with thickened skin
  • Darker skin tone (requires more conservative settings per session)

Fewer sessions likely

These factors reduce the number

  • Early-stage rosacea caught before significant vessel damage
  • Primarily flushing and diffuse redness without dense capillaries
  • Fair skin that responds well to the 595nm wavelength
  • Good trigger management and SPF compliance between sessions
  • No previous treatments that have desensitised the vessels
  • Treating a specific area (e.g. cheeks only, or a single vein)

What Happens Between Sessions

The Timeline: What to Expect Session by Session

VBeam results aren't always instant — the skin continues to respond for 2–4 weeks after each session. Here's a realistic picture of how the improvement typically unfolds.

After Session 1

First signs of change

  • Mild redness and warmth for a few hours post-treatment — normal
  • Some clients notice immediate darkening of treated vessels before they fade
  • Visible improvement typically begins 1–2 weeks after the session
  • Flushing episodes often reduce in frequency before vessels visibly clear
  • Results continue to develop over 4–6 weeks

After Sessions 2–4

Cumulative improvement

  • Each session targets vessels that remain or that were too small to see initially
  • Background redness continues to reduce with each treatment
  • Skin tone becomes more even and less reactive between sessions
  • Most clients reach their treatment goal within this window
  • Tom reassesses between sessions and adjusts the plan if needed

Long-Term

Will You Need Sessions Forever?

Not at the intensity of your initial course. The blood vessels collapsed during VBeam treatment are permanently gone — they don't come back. But rosacea is a chronic condition, which means new vessels can develop over time, particularly if you have ongoing exposure to triggers.

Most of my clients maintain their results with a single maintenance session every 6–12 months. Some with very mild rosacea go 18 months or longer between top-ups. The key is catching any new vessel development early — it's much easier to treat one or two new vessels than to wait until they've multiplied.

Think of it like dental hygiene rather than a one-time fix. A little regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping rosacea well managed for the long term.

The biggest thing you can do between sessions: wear SPF 50+ every single day. UV exposure is the number one driver of new vessel formation and rosacea progression. No amount of laser will keep rosacea under control if sun protection is inconsistent.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Can I see results after just one session?

Yes — many clients see meaningful improvement after a single VBeam session, particularly for mild to moderate rosacea. For mild flushing and early-stage redness, one session can sometimes be enough. For more established rosacea with dense visible capillaries, one session is a strong start but you'll typically need more to reach your goal.

How far apart should sessions be?

For rosacea, I typically space sessions 4–6 weeks apart. This gives the skin enough time to fully respond to each treatment before we assess what's needed next. Going sooner doesn't speed up results — the skin needs time to complete its healing process after each session.

What if I've had VBeam elsewhere and it didn't work?

Results vary significantly based on the settings used, the operator's experience, and the specific machine. The Candela VBeam is a medical-grade platform — but outcomes depend heavily on how it's calibrated for your skin. At your consultation I'll look at your previous treatment history and assess whether a different approach is likely to give you better results.

Is there downtime between sessions?

For standard non-purpuric VBeam settings, downtime is minimal — most clients have mild pinkness for a few hours and return to normal activity the same day. Between sessions you can go about your life normally, just avoiding intense sun exposure, heat, alcohol, and strong active skincare for 48 hours post-treatment.

What's the difference between purpuric and non-purpuric settings?

Non-purpuric settings deliver gentler energy that targets vessels without causing bruising — ideal for most rosacea clients who want zero downtime. Purpuric settings deliver stronger energy that can cause temporary bruising (5–10 days) in exchange for more aggressive vessel clearance, sometimes achieving in one session what would take two at gentler settings. I'll explain both options at your consultation and let you choose based on your lifestyle and how quickly you want results.

Do I have to commit to a full course upfront?

No. At Laser by Tom you book session by session. I'll give you a recommended treatment plan at your consultation, but there's no obligation to prepay for a course or commit to a package. I'd rather you see results from each session and choose to continue — not feel locked in from the start.

My Approach

What to Expect at Your Consultation

Every treatment at Laser by Tom starts with a free consultation — no obligation to proceed. I look at your rosacea type, severity, how long you've had it, and what you've tried before. From that I'll give you a realistic session estimate and explain what each session involves.

I won't give you a vague "it depends" and send you away — you'll leave the consultation with a clear picture of what's achievable, over what timeframe, and at what cost. If I don't think VBeam is the right fit for what you're dealing with, I'll tell you that too.
