Skin Ageing & What Causes It

As we age, the skin gradually loses collagen and elasticity — contributing to fine lines, wrinkles, looser or crepey texture, and a duller appearance. Sun exposure, environmental factors and lifestyle influence the rate of these changes.

CO₂ laser works in the deeper layers of the skin by creating controlled micro-injuries that trigger a wound-healing response. The healing response stimulates new collagen over the following weeks and months. Outcomes and recovery vary between individuals.

Two CO₂ Options — Different Intensity

Which option is appropriate depends on your skin and goals. Both are discussed at your free consultation.

Mild · Less Downtime

CO₂ Tightening Treatment

A lower-intensity fractional CO₂ treatment targeting the upper layers of skin. Generally chosen by those preferring less downtime.

Downtime: typically 2–3 days redness, gentle peeling 3–5 days

from$595

Intensive · More Downtime

CO₂ Fractional Resurfacing

A more intensive fractional CO₂ resurfacing treatment for deeper lines, wrinkles and texture concerns. Longer recovery.

Downtime: typically 5–7 days redness/peeling + residual pinkness 1–2 weeks

from$899

Possible Risks & Side Effects

All laser treatments carry risks. CO₂ is a more intensive treatment with a longer recovery and a higher risk profile than non-ablative lasers. Full risks are discussed at your consultation, and you are encouraged to ask questions and take time to decide before proceeding.

Common & Expected

  • Redness, swelling and warmth for several days
  • Pinpoint bleeding immediately after treatment
  • Peeling and flaking 3–7 days post-treatment
  • Itching as skin heals
  • Residual pinkness for 1–2 weeks
  • Sun sensitivity in the weeks following

Less Common & Serious

  • Prolonged redness lasting weeks or longer
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation
  • Blistering, crusting or infection
  • Activation of cold sores in those predisposed
  • Scarring (rare but possible)
  • Outcome that does not meet expectations

CO₂ laser is not suitable for every person. Factors including recent sun exposure or tanning, certain medications (notably oral isotretinoin / Roaccutane within the last 6 months), pregnancy, active skin infection, history of keloid scarring, and some skin and medical conditions may mean laser is not appropriate or needs to be deferred. Full screening is done at consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Tightening Treatment and Fractional Resurfacing?

The Tightening Treatment is a lower-intensity CO₂ session (typically 2–3 days downtime) generally chosen for milder concerns or where less downtime is preferred. Fractional Resurfacing is more intensive (typically 5–7 days downtime) and is typically used for deeper lines and more pronounced texture. Both stimulate collagen — the intensity and recovery differ. Which is appropriate depends on assessment.

How does CO₂ compare to anti-wrinkle injections?

They target different things. Anti-wrinkle injections (a medical procedure prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner) temporarily relax muscle activity that contributes to dynamic wrinkles. CO₂ laser is a non-injectable treatment that works on the skin itself, stimulating collagen and targeting texture. They are distinct, and some people choose to use both — discussed at your respective consultations. Laser by Tom does not provide injectable treatments.

How long do CO₂ outcomes typically last?

It varies between individuals. Collagen changes can persist for years, though ongoing skin ageing continues regardless. Many people return for a maintenance session every 2–3 years. Sun protection, skincare and lifestyle all influence how skin ages between treatments.

Can I treat my neck and décolletage with CO₂?

Yes — both areas can be treated. Neck and décolletage skin is thinner and more reactive than facial skin, so lower energy settings and longer spacing between sessions are typically used. Recovery in these areas can take longer.

What should I avoid before a CO₂ treatment?

Generally: avoid retinoids, AHAs and active sun exposure for 1–2 weeks before. You should not have CO₂ if you have used oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the last 6 months. Tell Tom about any history of cold sores — a prophylactic antiviral is generally prescribed by your GP in advance. Full pre-treatment preparation is provided in writing once a treatment is booked.

Is Laser by Tom a medical clinic?

No. Laser by Tom is a private laser studio. Tom is a trained laser operator, not a registered medical or nursing health practitioner. Treatments are provided as non-medical aesthetic laser services. Prescription items (such as a prophylactic antiviral before CO₂) require a separate consultation with your GP.
